I was interested to read this fascinating account of the origins and history of Das Dreimäderlhaus, and its sequel, Hannerl. I have research interest in the tenor Julius Spielmann and would like to share with readers that Spielmann created and staged, albeit briefly, another spin-off of Das Dreimäderlhaus in 1917.

Spielmann played the role of Schubert in Das Dreimäderlhaus at the Raimundtheater from January to the end of March 1917. At the conclusion of his guest season, it was announced that, within days, Spielmann would open in a new musical work, also based on the life of Schubert, at the Kristalypalota Theatre in Budapest. The new work was entitled "Schubert.(Eine Stunde aus seinem Leben)."

The new play was a Plan B. Originally, the Director of the Kristalypalota had wanted Julius Spielmann to play the starring role in that theatre's production of the original Das Dreimäderlhaus, but had to abandon the idea, because the Vigszinhaz,,which had exclusive rights to Dreimäderlhaus in Budapest, would not grant permission. So the director and Spielmann looked for other material and found an excerpt from Das Lied im Volke, a melodrama in eight acts by Richard Nordmann, first performed at the Theater an der Wien in 1900. Spielmann turned it into a one-act play, with Schubert's music adapted by Egon Neumann. The short, light production, featured several Viennese artistes. The limited reviews were positive and it seems to have played for a month. At the beginning of June 1917, "Schubert"appeared again, briefly, in Graz, to open the summer season at the Orpheum; it ran for one week. It was definitely the same production as in Budapest but Spielmann was nowhere to be found on the playbill. I have been unable to turn up any further trace of "Schubert" after that time. Does anyone have any knowledge of it?

If I may, I invite anyone with information about Julius Spielmann to contact me at juliusspielmannbio@gmail.com . .

Heinrich Berte was second husband to my great grandmother Ida Berte (formerly Ida Weiss) and step father to my grand father Louis Weiss. My mother (Ne Ruth Weiss) spent her youth in the house in Perchtoldsdorf where Berte and Ida lived.
Berte was Jewish. The operetta was banned during the Nazi occupation.
Royalties from the operetta were the main source of income for my great-grandmother after Berte died. She was forced to sell up when it went out of favour.
My mother now 87 and living in th UK was delighted to hear and be reminded of Berte the success of his operetta. PM

There was a song...I ask the spring blossom laden
To show me my maiden
The one that I long for and XXXX for to-day
And she will wear on her bosom
The gay lilac blossom

I can't recall the rest. I loved this song and would love to hear the entire piece. At least the 'Title etc so I could buy it?
