I have in front of me a curious programme from the fringes of London’s West End. “Doctor Faust” played at the Theatre Royal Holborn in 1872. Herve himself played Faust with Selina Dolaro as Marguerite, Mlle Clary as Mephisto and Lionel Brough as Valentine. The programme is not dated but the curtain raiser “Out of the Frying Pan” premiered in Holborn on 4 May 1872. “Doctor Faust” was certainly playing there by 14 June when an advert in The Times stated that the piece had been performed with Herve “at the Folies Dramatiques in Paris”, thereby confirming that this was a translation (with no librettists credited) of “Le petit Faust”. Curiously the settings of the second and third acts were changed to “A German Marketplace” and “Mont Cenis”.
