Dear Mr. Murray, in Italy Künneke is totally unknown, but not to me- a genoese that has found Künneke one of the best operetta composers who cannot be taken without his very fine orchestrations. His orchestra as well as his vocal notes are a continuous surprise and not only in DER VETTER AUS DINGDA … naturally … Nowadays the theatres intend the word ‘surprise’ only in the insolent stupid ideas of the stage directors. Yes, one has already noticed that I repeat this sentence; in truth it’s for me a fight against the theatres… Well, once again,.Mr. Murray, thanks for believing in Künneke’s art!

I’m hoping that some of the people who’ve attended my talks on Kuenneke in the \UK will tune into this. Most were aware of Wandergesell’ but the snappy numbers really made people sit up and want to dance. I’ve been working on a Kuenneke discography for a number of years and have plans to publish a handbook on the composer and his family (funding permitted!). He deserves to be so much better known over here! My good friend Sabine’s book goes a long way towards making him better known; hopefully I can achieve the same for English-speaking audiences.
