Celebrating Charles Kálmán’s 85th Birthday

In Vienna, a grand musical birthday celebration will be held in December. The “birthday boy” is Charles Kalman, oldest son of Emmerich Kalman. He studied music in the USA while his family lived in New York, later also in France, he scored early successes in the 1950s operetta scene in Germany, completed Arizona Lady for the world-premiere in 1954 and later wrote many chansons and musical comedies. The Conservatory of Vienna will dedicate three concerts to Charles Kalman, who will be present at all events and perform himself too.

The man behind this special celebration is Wolfgang Dosch. He has been a close friend of Charles Kalman for years, has premiered many of Kalman’s works and has now persuaded his students at the conservatory to try this repertoire – and thus present it, on a larger scale, to Austrian audiences.

The three concerts are on December 15, 16 and 21, 2014.
