This week-end, the Budapest Operetta Theatre is hosting a conference on Die Csardasfürstin, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of that show. Budapest theater historian Magdolna Jákfalvi has put together a two-day gathering, together with dramaturg Attila Lörinczy, to look at the various aspects of this show.
The conference is mostly in Hungarian, and the various papers will be published later on, in Hungarian. However, there is one English talk on the US-American performance history of Csardasfürstin, which premiered on Broadway as The Riviera Girl. This talk was presented by ORCA’s Dr. Kevin Clarke and filmed. While the Hungarians got to see a version with Hungarian subtitles, you can watch the original version without subtitles on YouTube if you want to hear more about Riviera Girl and Gipsy Princess, in the version by Guy Bolton, P.G. Wodehouse and Jerome Kern (addition music.)
